A little bit about Gyl's art work
Gyl Rae has spent over 25 years making art, from drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, to sculpture and installation. Her main love is drawing and painting, working with abstract styles, looking at colour, patterns, shapes, mark making, detail, and light, deeply inspired by nature.
Her early work saw her delve deep into colour, painting large scale abstract paintings in oils, then evolving onto working on sculptural installations and screen prints inspired by the Bauhaus and minimalist architecture, always starting true to her love of colour and light. The play of light has always fascinated her from seeing Monet's waterlilies as a young girl, to James Turrell & Dan Flavin's light installations.
Here's a quote review from an exhibition of which her work involved in, "Gyl Rae's sculptures use concealed colour to great effect - warm, soft pastel tines glow from behind long rectilinear forms that lean against the wall, colouring the surface with pink, yellow and blue clouds. the shapes deconstruct Flavin's 'Monument for V Tatlin', but Rae's use of light pulls the plug on his bombast and theoretically kicks over Serra's hulking one ton prop pieces." https://www.list.co.uk/article/2688-immaculate-collection
Gyl's most recent work is inpired by her deep love and connection with nature. The colours, shapes, light, patterns, magic and stillness she feels and sees all around her in the Scottish countryside and the Highlands of Scotland. You'll find Gyl at her most joyful in nature.
