A lilt bit of background info on Gyl's work and what inspires her
Gyl has spent over 25 years creating art, from drawing, painting, printmaking to sculpture. She mainly loves to work with abstract styles playing with colours, marks, shapes, colours and light, though also creates more realistic pieces or work if needed.
Her early work from her degree show at art school was based on the architecture she saw in Berlin and the sharp, clean minimalist structures around her, also inspired by architects across the world. The play of light and colour has always fascinated her, from Monet as young girl, to light artists such those in the Bauhaus, and people such as James Turrell and Dan Flavin.
"Gyl Rae’s sculptures use concealed colour to great effect – warm, soft pastel tones glow from behind the long rectilinear forms that lean against the wall, colouring the surface with pink, yellow and blue clouds. The shapes deconstruct Flavin’s ‘Monument for V Tatlin’, but Rae’s use of light pulls the plug on his bombast and theoretically kicks over Serra’s hulking one ton prop pieces. "
Her work can range from bold, bright colourful abstract paintings, inspired by nature and patterns, such as those from Islamic art, she loves the detailed pattern, colour and geometry of their tile work, to more minimalist geometric detailed pencil drawings and printmaking, where she plays around with simple geometric shapes, tones, colour, space, light and structure. Gyl since being a child has loved the really practical hands on process of making things and still does, and the simplicity of art, you can see her love of colour, mark making and pattern shine through, and the tactile process of making objects and playing with them in space and light. You can see this joy and wonderment, just like that of a child exploring something new, in her beautiful work, where Gyl plays with colour, light and space, with the love of the whole process oozing through.
Gyl's more recent works are inspired by her love of and deep connection with nature, the colours, shapes, patterns, magic, stillness and light she sees in her everyday living, whilst she walks, plays, work and drives through the Scottish rural countryside and Highlands. You'll find Gyl at her most joyful and happiest out in nature.
