We see multitudes of articles on self-care, but what does it truly mean to self-care?
Self-care is not something we only do at the weekends, such as going for a pamper or to get our nails done, now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with either of them, but self care is about how we are with ourselves, and I would say more so our body, every single moment of every single day.
Our bodies are they key to an amazing intelligence and wisdom that resides in us, so is it any wonder to avoid this, we have grown up to abuse them pretty much every single day, from the food and drinks we consume, how and the way we eat, they way we sleep, exercise, dress, the thoughts we let in, the relationships we have and many others things.
It’s often when we are run down, have let ourselves go or are exhausted to the point of illness and disease, that our body clearly says stop, no more; this is when we start to considered or look at ways of caring for ourselves more, but it’s this lack of true deep care for our bodies and ourselves that have got us there in the first place; you could say in truth we have been irresponsible. But that is not to beat our selves up for it, but simply be honest. Because lets be honest, honesty is one of the keys to self-care and healing.
We’ve all heard the saying you can’t take care of someone else, if you don’t take care of yourself, and this is so true, for how can we offer other true care and support when we have a body that is so exhausted and depleted of care and love that we often end up ready to snap at another, weepy, resenting people or doing things, or on the edge of very ill health, where we literally can’t keep going, and it takes our body to stop us, because we’ve been ignoring the signs for so long.
No matter how we might try to avoid it, we cannot escape the very humbling truth and fact, that, everything comes back to our body, to deeply caring for, and loving our body.
So what are the starting steps? For each one of us this may be different, it is about simply beginning to listen to our body, honoring what we feel, acting on it, being open to making mistakes, and our body will speak very loudly from there.
Some super simple things are;
There is so much more than can be said about self-care and the stepping stones to start, the more we apply a few simple things, making the focus about our bodies, the more our body will speak loud and clear. There is no hard and fast one rule for all, it’s about getting to know yourself, your body, and practically trying things out. And the thing with self-care as with all of life, it constantly evolves, so there may be something you did a while ago, that now doesn’t feel right anymore, so instead of continuing to do it, it’s asking out body okay where do we go from here.
